Almudena Cathedral

Almudena Cathedral is a Catholic church situated in Madrid, it’s the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Madrid, the Cathedral was built on the site of a Medieval Mosque which was destroyed by Alfonso VI in 1083, who reconquered Madrid, the church was built by Pope John Paul II in 1993.

In 1561, The Capital of Spain was changed from Toledo to Madrid, however, the seat of the Church in Spain stayed in Toledo, which meant that the new capital had no Cathedral, Plans to build the new cathedral in Madrid was dedicated to the Virgin of Almudena, however,  due to the costs of running the Kingdom of Spain the construction of the cathedral was postponed and the construction of Almudena began in 1879. Francisco de Cubas designed the cathedral in a Gothic revival style and later adapted the plans of the de Cubs to a Baroque exterior. The Cathedral stands at 104m Long and 76m wide and the central dome has a diameter of 20m.

The Cathedral has a Museum which houses effigies of the city’s patron saints: San Isidro Labrador, The Virgin Mary of La Almudena and exhibition of the life of the church and the seven sacraments.

You can find a Statue of the Pope John Paul II in front of the Cathedral, which commemorates the moment the cathedral was built. In May 2004, The first royal wedding happened in nearly a century between Prince Felipe and oña Letizia, took place in Madrid’s Cathedral.
