Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière was built at the end of the 19th century by Architect Pierre Bossan and the building honours the Virgin Mary, who represented at the top of the Basilica, construction began in 1872 and Finished in 1896, the Basilica is flanked by four octagonal towers.

Virgin Mary helped the city of Lyon from the Black Death and swept through Europe in 1643, and every year on the 8th of December, Lyon thanks the Virgin Mary by lighting candles, known as the Festival of Lights. You can have one amazing and beautiful view of Lyon by climbing the 287 steps to the Basilica Observatory.

Since 1982 the tower has housed the antennas of Radio Fourvière, the predecessor of Radios chrétiennes francophones.

Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière is an ancient site, now part of the Historic Site of Lyons World Heritage Site declared by UNESCO in 1998.

How to get there

  • Walking: From Saint Jean: take the rise of the chazeaux then climb St. Bartholomew, then enter the garden of the Rosary on your right and climb to the basilica. From St Paul: take the climb St Bartholomew and go up to Fourvière.
  • Funicular: The nearest Funicular is the Fourvière, service ‘F2’, from there it’s literally a two-minute walk if that.
