El Bañuelo

The Bañuelo baths are situated in the lower area of a private house in Carrera del Darro, which is at the foot of the Alhambra, The Arab baths is one of the few surviving building that were saved from destruction by the Catholic Monarchs. The Baths have been declared a National Monument and was restored by the Architect Balbas in 1918.

The Banuelo baths roof and columns, can be dated back to the Eleventh Century, The baths are one of the oldest and best preserved Arab baths in Spain. Its rooms are rectangular and have various chambers with arches made out of brick,its walls are made of concrete, the star shaped holes in the roof allow light to enter the rooms and steam to escape, which also reduced the weight of the roof.

The baths were used as a traditional meeting place for the locals and to relax and freshen up, have hair cuts and massages, due to the era; men and women were not seen together in the baths and they would come to visit the baths on different days, brides to be would also come here before their wedding days.

The Entrance to the baths can be accessed through a small house, which was reconstructed during the Christian era, walking through the small hall way, you will find a courtyard, which has a pool, from this courtyard you can access the baths. You will find three rooms: Cool Room, Central Room and a Hot Room. The service area is called Al Buma, its were the boiler and firewood is stored.
