The flag was finally declared to be the official national flag by the Congress of Tucumán on July 20, 1816, shortly after the declaration of independence.

According to a decree which stated that the Official flag of the Nation is the flag with the sun in its centre, as approved by the Congress and reunited with Buenos Aires on February 25, 1818.

  • The colour blue stands for heaven
  • The white for the snow overcast peaks of the Andes.

The designing of the flag pictures the position of the South American mainland between the South Pacific Ocean and the South Atlantic Ocean.

Brief History about the Flag of Argentina

On February 18, 1812, the First Triumvirate instituted The Argentine Cockade as a national symbol, which was created by Manuel Belgrano.

The flag was hoisted for the first time in Buenos Aires on August 23, 1812.

In 1861, the current version of the flag was adopted and the standardization was done in 2012.

The blue and white colours were chosen by Manuel Belgrano, the leader of the Argentinian revolution against Spain, and represent the blue sky parting to reveal white clouds, as is said to have happened when the Liberation demonstration began in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on May 25, 1810. Argentina’s Flag Day is celebrated on 20th June, the anniversary of Belgrano’s death.
