The flag of Nevada was created by Governor John Sparks and Col. Harry Day in 1905. The first Flag of Nevada was adopted in 1905, over 40 years after Nevada became a state in 1864.  The current flag of Nevada was approved in 1991. The blue of the flag was based directly on the colour of the flag of the United States.

Flag of Utah Design and Colour Scheme

The state flag of Nevada features a variant of the state’s emblem located in the canton.

  • The flag also features the motto, “Battle Born,” which references Nevada’s statehood during the Civil War.
  • A law enacted in 1991 directed that the word “Nevada” appear below the star and above the sagebrush sprays
  • The emblem contains a silver star, which symbolizes the nickname “The Silver State.”

  • Gold: scroll, flowers, “Nevada”
  • Green: sagebrush sprays and leaves
  • White: star
  • Black: “Battle Born”

The Nevada flag can be produced with different proportions including 2:3, 3:5, or 5:8.

Brief History about the Flag of Nevada

Nevada became the 36th state on October 31, 1864, after telegraphing the Constitution of Nevada to Congress and The first official state flag was adopted in 1905 and was designed by Governor John Sparks and Colonel Harry Day.

The first flag was blue featured the words, “Nevada,” “Silver” and “Gold,” paying tribute to the state’s natural resources, the flag was in use until 1915 When the flag’s design was modified to include a state emblem, gold and yellow stars, and the motto, “All For Our Country.”

In 1926, a flag design contest was held and the current flag design was created by Louis Shellback III, and what followed was a disagreement between the state legislature over the placement of the state’s name on the flag, It was in 1929 when the governor signed into law the state flag.

However, an inaccuracy was discovered in 1989 led to some changes in the design. The new design was officially adopted and put into use on July 25, 1991.
