The Cathedral of Jaén is situated on the ruins of a Mosque, construction began in 1249 and was consecrated in 1724, throughout history the church was damaged and rebuilt a number of times, until the sixteenth century when several architects mainly Andrés de Vandelvira, who was the most important architect, built the biggest part of the Cathedral. The Cathedral has some of the most important religious relics such as the Holy Face of the Veil of Veronica

It is the home of important religious relics, such as the Holy Face of the Veil of Veronica. It is said that Saint Veronica used this cloth to wipe the face of Christ, and his image then became imprinted upon it. Pick up an audio guide and admire the adorned interior of the cathedral. On the lower floor, experience an impressive collection of religious art from over the centuries.

The building has two adjacent buildings the Temple of the Tabernacle in the Northern facade and the in the Northern facade and the Sacristy in the southern Facade, which has three naves that are separated by the cross shaped pillar columns and Corinthian entablatures above, with arches that support richly decorated a special type of Gothic vault known as the ‘Vaídas vaults’. the temple inside is decorated with stone sculptures which are made by Pedro Roldán, Julián Roldán and Lucas González. Within the seventeen chapels you can find paintings and sculptures from the 17th and 18th centuries.

The Cathedral of Jaen has been listed as World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

How to get there

  • By Train: The Jaen Train Station is 30 minutes walk to the cathedral, around 1.1 mile or 1.9 km, after exiting the train station walk onto the “Paseo de la Estación” road until you get onto “Calle Roldán y Marín” which should take around 15 minute, then onto “Plaza de la Constitución” from there take the 2nd right on to “Calle Menéndez y Pelayo”walk straight down to “Calle Campanas” road and the Jaén Cathedral is on that road.
  • Parking: near by car parks can be found around the city and Street parking is also available
  • By Buss: the main bus station in Jaen is located at: Plaza Coca de la Piñera, 323003 Jaén, Spain
