The Modemuseum Hasselt is a fashion Museum in Hasselt situated in a historical complex of buildings which were built in 1664, The museum first opened its doors to the public in 1989 and had a short period between 1993 and 1995, where restorations and re-design of the museum was needed, and finally reopening on the 2nd of September 1995.

In the 15th century, the clothing industry was a major importance to Hasselt as one in five of the population would earn an income from the clothing industry and in 1536 the city had around 200 master cloth weavers.

Since World War II, the Fashion and Textile business had began to flourish and become popular, people all across Europe would come and find stylish and luxury clothing and accessories. The Museum was needed to inspire and protect the creative history of the city.

The Museum has a collection of around 18,00 items of clothing and accessories, which tells the history of the western fashion from the early 1750 until today. Unique collections of designer clothing such as shoes and hat can be found from artists such as:

  • Cristobal Balenciaga
  • Pierre Cardin
  • André Courrèges
  • Patou
  • Versace

Exhibitions: The Vulgar – Fashion Redefined (30 September 2017 until 14 January 2018)

This unique exhibition explores the boundaries between good taste and bad taste in fashion. By means of fashion objects through five hundred years of history.

Brief building History

 

The Modemuseum Hasselt is a fashion Museum in Hasselt, located in a historical complex of buildings, built in 1664 AD.

The building complex has had different functions for its use, for about three centuries the complex was a hospital however after the French rule, it was given a new purpose, and the building was used for churches and convents but in 1796 the convents community was ____ and the building was used as a prison and as a barracks and also the old nursing wings were made to use again for the committee of civil hospices to house a civil hospital.

In 1957, The historical building was no longer used as a hospital and was now given temporary accommodation to the Town Museum, the Jenever Museum and the Municipal Cultural Office.

The historical building complex was given to the Modemuseum Hasselt, In 1988 as a permanent accommodation.

The restoration of the building began in 1993 and finished in 1995 by architect Luc Vanroye however the interior and the like the glass support structure between the two wings and furniture was designed by Vittorio Simoni.

  • By Car: Hasselt is easy accessible via the E313 (exit 27, 28, or 29) and E314 (exit 29) motorways. car park spaces available around the city.
  • By Bus: Any bus that goes to the city centre and then a 5 to 10 minute to the Fashion Museum. bus services such as: H13, H41, 51, 104, 18A, 48
  • Walking: The fashion museum is around a 3 to 5 minute walk from Jenever Museum Hasselt via the Witte Nonnenstraat and Gasthuisstraat.
  • Train Station: The Fashion Museum Hasselt is walking distance of the railway station.

The Museum is fully wheelchair accessible, Wheelchair-accessible toilet is available on the Ground floor.
