Montpellier Cathedral

Montpellier Cathedral isolatedtraveller

Montpellier Cathedral was a former Benedictine chapel built in 1364 and later the Chapel became a cathedral in 1536 when the city was transferred from the Maguelon to Montpellier under the Rule of Francis I. The Cathedral is a national monument and the seat of the Archdiocese of Montpellier.

The Cathedral building suffered a number of damages during the Wars of Religion between the Catholics and Protestants in the 16th Century, it was later rebuilt in the 17th century. The Cathedral is known for housing the relics of Saint-Germain, Saint Baise and Saint-Benoit.

During the Cathedral restorations and construction of the Cathedral, a number of changes were made and the only elements left of the old medieval period are the two cylindrical pillars on the front side, 4.55m in diameter supporting the arched porch.
