HD 189733 B: Unveiling the Terrifying Atmosphere of the Exoplanet

HD 189733 B

HD 189733B

HD 189733 b is an exoplanet located approximately 63 light-years away from Earth in the constellation Vulpecula. HD 189733 b was first discovered in 2005 through the transit method, where the planet passes in front of its parent star, causing a slight decrease in the star’s brightness and the colour of the planet was only figured out in 2013

The planet’s blue colour is caused by light scattering off silicate particles in its atmosphere. We have two other planets in our solar system which have that ocean-blue look: Uranus and Neptune. The planet is the same size as Jupiter and it’s hotter than Earth, so life on that planet isn’t likely. it goes around its host star around 2.2 Earth days.

Classification

HD 189733 b is classified as a “hot Jupiter” due to its similarity in size to Jupiter and its close proximity to its parent star. It is a gas giant, like Jupiter, but it orbits its star at a much closer distance.

Size and Mass

HD 189733 b has a diameter of about 1.14 times that of Jupiter, making it slightly larger. Its mass is approximately 1.13 times that of Jupiter.

Atmosphere

HD 189733 b has a well-studied atmosphere that has provided valuable insights into exoplanetary atmospheres. Observations have revealed the presence of molecular hydrogen, water vapour, and methane in its atmosphere. The atmosphere is also known to exhibit high-speed winds, reaching speeds of up to 8,700 kilometres per hour (5,400 miles per hour).

Temperature and Conditions

The proximity of HD 189733 b to its parent star results in extreme temperatures. The planet has an average temperature of around 930 degrees Celsius (1,700 degrees Fahrenheit), making it inhospitable for life as we know it.

The weather of the planet isn’t the best, let’s just say you would rather stand in a wind storm on Earth than planet HD 189733b, winds can blow up to 8,700 km/h, that’s 5,400 mph, which makes it 7 times the speed of sound. the planet is around 63 light years from us, so if you weren’t planning to go there don’t worry we wouldn’t….well any time soon.
