Birmingham is known for its industrial revolution and is the second largest city in England but what you don’t know is the fact that it’s a really popular city with an upbeat nightlife, that would make you want to come back and spend more time exploring it.
I have seriously enjoyed many nights out in Birmingham, but still have missed a lot of underground bars that only a handful of people know about.

Here are some of the best quirky and retro bars in Birmingham!


Geisha – Permanently closed

Geisha’s is a traditional Japanese interior with a modern tattoo design, which gives it this modern and upper-class feel to it, it’s a bar which becomes a club space, that offers its customers private club space which gives it that feel of exclusivity.

Spotlight – Permanently closed

Spotlight is a quirky place with lots of different pieces of artwork around the building and has that industrial feel, as it’s located underneath a railway arch, which is popular in Digbeth.

The Lost & Found

The Lost & Found is an old bank that was transformed into this beautiful botanical-themed bar, with a Victorian charm and has a ‘secret’ room which is located behind a bookshelf door that is used as a private room for booking only and also has a bar inside.

The Alchemist

The Alchemist is truly one of the best places to visit, it has class, cocktails and that romantic dark look, It is a place of style and class, it’s one of the most unique bars you can visit, and it’s a place you don’t want to miss, as it offers a menu that will surprise you, its well worth experiencing.

Just remember if you going at peak times, to expect to wait a while, this is a highly popular place.

The Botanist

The Botanist is known for its botanical-themed cocktails, beer and ales; the interior of the place is whimsical and it’s very open and gives plenty of space to the public, even when it’s full, you can still enjoy the place, it has that garden inspired feel to it.

Bacchus Bar

You might find this place hard to find, an underground bar which is located in one of the oldest streets in Birmingham, you have to walk down the sweeping spiral staircase that will lead you to this underground dungeon, it well-designed in a medieval Gothic interior, and you can find an entire suit of Armour in a corner and even half naked entwined bodies, with lots of dark lighting which gives this place that special look, its relaxing and interesting atmosphere.
