Rijksmuseum is national museum of Holland, the museum is located in the Museum Square, close to other museums such as the Stedelijk and Van Gogh Museums.

The Main building was designed by architect Pierre Cuypers and was first opened up in 1885, however for 10 years between 2003 and 2013 the main building was getting some much needed renovation, which had cost over 350 million euros, the success of the reopening of the main building made the museum the largest art museum in the country and was Netherlands most visited museum with over 2.2 million visitors.

Facts

It was formally established by decree of the King of Netherlands Louis Bonaparte in 1808.

Construction of the Rijksmuseum began in 1876 and it opened in 1885.

The Rijksmuseum houses one million objects. Approximately 8000 are on display at any given time.

The Rijksmuseum has more than 2000 paintings, including work by Rembrandt and his students.

The Rijksmuseum contains 80 rooms, and 1.5 km of walking space.

Eat & Drink

If you would like a coffee or even a nice meal, you can find the Rijks restaurant in the Philips Wing, which has 140 seats and was awarded a Michelin star in 2017.
