St Machar's Cathedral

St Machar’s Cathedral

St Machar’s Cathedral was the seat of the bishop of Aberdeen, around 1131, However, the Bishop Nechtan moved from Mortlach to Dufftown.

William Wallace in 1305 was executed and parts of his body were sent across the country to warn other dissenters, however, the left arm ended up in Aberdeen and has been buried in the walls of the Cathedral.

St Marchar’s Cathedral is longer a ‘Cathedral’ its rather a high kirk, this is because this hasn’t been the seat of the bishop since 1690.

‘kirk’ means a Scottish word for a church.

It is located to the north of the city centre, in the former burgh of Old Aberdeen.

The church was rebuilt in 1131 in Norman style however shortly after the rebuilding, King David the first, transferred the see of Mortlach to Aberdeen, making the church a cathedral.
