Uffizi Gallery

Uffizi Gallery

The Uffizi building which houses the Uffizi Gallery dates back to 1560, built by Giorgio Vasari for Cosimo I de’ Medici, to house the Granducal Magistratures of Tuscany.

Uffizi is one of the first modern museums which opened to visitors in 1765 and formally becoming a museum in 1865 and currently the most visited Gallery in Italy.

After the last remaining Medici family line died out, their collections of art work was gifted to the city of Florence and placed in the Uffizi Gallery.

Between the 16th and the 17th century, the Hall of Geographics Maps was built to dedicate the map of Medici Domains in places such as Florence, Siena and island of Elba and also a Mathematics Room which featured scientific instruments very innovative for the period.

The first few rooms introduce you to the 13th and the 14th Century style, art work from Giotto, Simone Martini and Gentile da Fabriano. As you explore the rest of the Gallery you find art work from artists such as:

  • Masaccio
  • Botticelli
  • Leonardo
  • Michelangelo
  • Raffello
  • Tiziano
  • Caravaggio
